Comprehensive ophthalmology covers the evaluation, diagnosis and follow-up of common visual and eye problems: from routine checkups and changes in prescription to management of chronic conditions such as glaucoma, cataract, dry eye or the effects of diabetes on the eyes. It is the usual point of entry for most patients, with referral to neuro-ophthalmology when the reason for consultation warrants it.

Common reasons for consultation

Patients seek care for progressive blurred vision, difficulty reading or seeing at a distance, eye discomfort or dryness, regular monitoring with diabetes or high blood pressure, suspected cataract, a family history of glaucoma, or a routine examination after a prolonged period without eye care.

What the consultation evaluates

In addition to the five areas covered in this section—cataract, glaucoma, dry eye, diabetic retinopathy and comprehensive eye examinations—comprehensive ophthalmology also covers other conditions of the cornea and anterior segment (pterygium, keratoconus, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis), eyelids and tear drainage system (blepharitis, chalazion, tear duct obstruction), retina and vitreous (hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, macular degeneration, macular edema), and refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia).

Depending on the clinical findings, evaluation may be extended with additional diagnostic tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), perimetry, pachymetry, corneal topography or biometry. This does not mean that every patient needs every test; the indication depends on each case.
