Comprehensive Eye Examination

What is assessed during a consultation and which tests may be indicated.

Dr. Eliécer Arosemena with his brother at Clínica Óptica Martínez García

What is assessed?

A comprehensive eye examination assesses visual acuity, refraction (the eyeglass prescription), the health of the anterior segment using slit-lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure (tonometry), and the fundus. Depending on the case, it may also include gonioscopy to assess the eye's drainage angle.

Which additional tests may be indicated?

Depending on the examination findings, the doctor may recommend additional tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the optic nerve, macula or anterior segment, OCT angiography, perimetry (visual field testing), pachymetry (corneal thickness), corneal topography or A-scan biometry. These tests are not automatically included in every consultation or its price: they are recommended according to each patient's initial examination.

When to have an eye examination

A comprehensive eye examination is appropriate for routine checkups, changes in prescription, a family history of eye disease such as glaucoma, or regular monitoring in patients with diabetes or high blood pressure.

Where additional tests are available

Additional diagnostic tests (perimetry, different types of OCT, pachymetry, topography and biometry) are available at Clínica Óptica Martínez García, La Chorrera, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
